Agency vs DIY local SEO: an honest breakdown.

I sell local SEO, so you'd expect this article to end with "hire me." Half of it will. The other half is the truth: a motivated owner with 5 hours a month can move their own rankings - and for some situations, DIY is genuinely the right call.

What you can absolutely do yourself

  • Fully optimize your Google Business Profile - categories, services, photos, posts (my free checklist walks every field)
  • Build a review request habit after every job
  • Reply to every review within 48 hours
  • Fix your NAP consistency on the major directories
  • Make your phone number unmissable on your site

That list alone beats most of your local competitors who do none of it. Total cost: zero. Total time: about 5 hours a month once the system runs.

Where DIY hits a wall

  • Service-area landing pages written well enough to rank - a skill and a time sink
  • Citation cleanup at scale - 40+ directories is a weekend, every quarter, forever
  • Content that compounds - writing, publishing, interlinking, updating
  • Technical site work - speed, structure, schema, fixing what breaks silently
  • Diagnosing plateaus - knowing WHY you're stuck at position 6 is the actual expertise

The honest decision framework

Do the math on your job value. If one extra job a month covers professional SEO, your time is better spent running jobs - every hour you spend fighting Google is an hour not billing. But if you're a new business watching every dollar, DIY the list above for six months, generate the cash flow, then hire out the parts you can't do. Both are legitimate. The only wrong answer is doing nothing for another year while competitors compound.

The middle path most people miss

DIY the profile and reviews. Hire out the technical and content layers. That hybrid gets you 70% of the result at a fraction of full-service cost - and any honest consultant will tell you so. My audit does exactly that: if DIY is your right answer, I'll tell you and point you at the checklist.

The no-agenda audit

I'll tell you if you don't need me.

The free audit is honest by design - it's why it converts. If your situation is a DIY win, you'll hear that, plus exactly what to do first.
